As part of its Calendar of Business for today, it is my understanding that the County Assembly will be undertaking input, discussion and report on the activities of the Special Commission on County Governance. At this time, I would like to respectfully call your attention to the attached Cape Cod Times news article from December 15th entitled, “County advocates aim for broader reach.” Within the content of the twelfth paragraph (which has been marked for your convenience), you will notice a reference made to a statement made by Wendy Northcross with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce in which she calls for the complete abolition of the County Assembly of Delegates. I find statements such as this to be truly disturbing…
As a constituent, Cape Cod resident and voter, I would like to emphatically voice my absolute opposition to such an ill-advised and undemocratic course of action being recommended to the Special Commission. The County Assembly of Delegates is the duly elected democratic voice of the people of Cape Cod, and provides the necessary protections against overzealous special interest groups like those represented by Ms. Northcross. The County Assembly is the epitome of the American system of “checks and balances” as embodied in both the Barnstable County Home Rule Charter and the United States Constitution.
Along with the other residents and voters of Cape Cod, I look forward to the Assembly’s appropriate response to the Special Commission regarding this and other important issues of concern. Thank you for your valuable time and considerate attention, it is truly appreciated.
